A working alliance between a supervisor and counsellor in which the counsellor can offer an account or recording of her work; reflect on it; receive feedback, and where appropriate guidance. The object of this alliance is to enable the counsellor to gain ethical competence, confidence, compassion and creativity so as to give her best possible service to her clients” (Inskipp & Proctor, 2009).

Supervision is a joint endeavour in which a practitioner with the help of a supervisor, attends to their clients, themselves as part of their client practitioner relationships and the wider systemic context, and by doing so improves the quality of their work, transforms their client relationships, continuously develops themselves, their practice and the wider profession.” (Hawkins & Shohet, 2012)

I think the words “working alliance” and “joint endeavour” are very important in the way I work as a supervisor. As in therapy, so in supervision, or consultancy as it’s sometimes known, I like to work as a team. I am not the expert, I have experience and training that can be useful to share. Encouragement, nurture, challenge, humour, curiosity – you will find all these and more in our sessions.

I notice that as I become more experienced in my therapy work, the more I need supervision. This has come as a surprise. My own use of supervision has increased my confidence and capability as a therapist. I have learnt that admitting to and exploring my experiences are the quickest route to improvement. Being brave enough to be open to all that my supervisors can offer has influenced my own role as a supervisor.

Finding a supervisor that suits you rather than your modality is probably a good guide when searching for someone who will support your work and the future vision of your practice.

I offer a supervision template that keeps us focused on what you wish to discuss. I enjoy working with experienced and trainee therapists, we can all learn from one another no matter where we are on the journey. My Diploma in Supervision gave me a lot of insight and knowledge on how to use supervision well and I am happy to share that with supervisees so that we both respect and get pleasure from our chosen profession.

I look forward to hearing from you.
