Mia Phillips Psychotherapist

I believe that change can happen through effective therapy.  For many of us, it is possible, no matter what our circumstances, to make the changes we need and to let go of the past.

After finishing my languages degree, I worked in the commercial sector for over 20 years before beginning to train in the area of mental health. So, I came to this work as a mature woman who had already lived a life with its challenges and disappointments, pain, happiness and surprises. I feel my life experiences influence the way I work, giving me an understanding of how great our individual potential can be and how fear, in all its different forms, can block that.

My experiences of being in therapy also contribute to what I bring as a therapist; understanding what it feels like to be a client who ultimately benefited and whose life gained more purpose and meaning.

I obtained my Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling at Guildford College.

I went on to train in EMDR Therapy in 2008, a highly researched and evidenced based treatment. that is strongly informed by the advances in neuroscience

EMDR is used for so many of the issues that people bring to therapy including childhood and adult trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, complex mourning, addictions, OCD, depression, birth and pregnancy trauma.

I refreshed my EMDR training in 2012.

Through formal and full assessment of my work with clients, I was awarded Europe Accredited EMDR Practitioner status in 2016.

Over the years, my Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities have added a number of therapy tools I can offer clients, including Brief Solution Focused Therapy and CBT skills. Having a strong interest in early childhood and trauma, my CPD includes a wide range of trauma, attachment and PTSD courses, seminars and conferences.

Gaining a Diploma in Supervision in 2013 has been invaluable when working with student and experienced therapists.

As an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I adhere to their Code of Ethics.

You will find me on the Government’s Health Professionals Register and I am registered with BUPA and several referral agencies.

To continue giving my best to clients, I am committed to CPD, learning new skills, keeping my knowledge fresh and up to date, being open to new ways of working and thinking. I receive regular clinical supervision.

"I was sad, unhappy, negative and put way too much pressure on myself but you helped me to understand the root of my problems, gave me clarity and helped me to challenge myself when it came to my negative way of thinking" E. March 2016
